paint

The kitchen walls needed a new color. And so, this past weekend, we painted.

I, the clumsy one, for fear of some unrepairable catastrophe, only edged a little along the corners. The rest of the time, I sufficed myself with snapping pictures to capture the afternoon. It really was quite nice, and the end result is beautiful, I must say.

A new coat of color sometimes feels like the initiation into a new era. A new breath to fill the space; new hues to set the tone.

Ironically, as these hot July days slip slowly past, a new era of my life is simmering in the background, almost ready to begin. My Autumn will find me traveling East to pursue a higher education in Liberal Arts. My little brother will begin a new stage in his education by attending a brick-and-mortar school. My older sister has begun to prepare for her wedding day next summer.
After 18 years of a beautiful childhood, educated at home, surrounded by my family and dearest friends, it all seems a bit overwhelming (and  simultaneously exhilarating) to have all this change hit in one giant wave.

But, a new coat of paint sometimes rolls on quicker than expected, and this new era in my life is almost ready to begin.
...

The old green kitchen of my childhood is now a beautiful golden maple. I love it. It's absolutely perfect, and I wouldn't change it back for the world.

However, I'm shamelessly nostalgic. I also love to close my eyes and imagine the green paint that is now hidden underneath the new coat. And I smile, with memories of the sweet old days of the past on the tip of my tongue. Yes -- the old paint is now hidden, but it's still there underneath the new coat, and there, it will always remain.
